Salsa Competition Semi Final Part 2

This look like an overdue review that comes in late. Oh yeah, late as in I lose most part of my memories from that nite. Feeling like a goldfish of late, in regards to my memory :-) Maybe the words will not be stronger too, since I recall been pretty pissed off that nite.

This round the place is even more packed. I din manage to get any 'live' tickets, so I can only sit down from afar and view the 'live' telecast. Oh, tell me about it man. The telecast sux. Poor Angle. Poor Lens. Poor Tele! So it might be highly possible due to all these reviews, I find the dance on the nite mostly too boring, too mild! Its like watching some poorly capture screener from our next door neighbour on vcd (its not even dvd quality!). I must say this will definitely affect one's judgement.

Couple no.1. Tell me what I remember! I can't remember anything! Ok, this just simply means its not impressive enough. I was kinda bored with it. But I do not discredit them. they have nice and neat moves. No big bang. No multiple orgasm ... i mean turns and spins and flips. Its not exciting is what I'm trying to say. And they have wasted a good ending potion. Its wonderful music with nice beat for ending a choreo-ed dance but its all wasted by standing there waiting.

Couple no.2 seems to come in from the same league with couple no.1. I sense no life, no sensational feel, no enticing feeling. Sorry but i must say the guy is a little too stiff. Almost no body movement from him. I do not agree with too much shaking, but too little does not look great on everyone. On some dancers, u can see the pose, it gives u a very good and clean feel, but on others, lifeless and dead is the thoughts.

All those long enough in the salsa scene will probably know about this guy. The guy with a lot of experiences. No one (competitors i meant) has most experiences than him, in terms of taking part in competition. Couple no.3 has a great dance, I must say. Dance to the music but not the beat. I'm like watching a comtemporary dance instead of a salsa performance. Where IS the beat, I must ask. I'm lost just within the first few bars. Maybe he's the muscle man, carrying his lady round and round. Beat s me what is that for.

Couple no.4 is good, I must say. From the wonderful invention called television, they looked flawless tho I heard offline comments there's a couple of mistakes here and there. Hey, its amateur competition lor. But still, the dance gives me a "energy-less" feel. But that is the start, it gradually got exciting, more challenging and more and more movements are coming out. I must say its well-paced. You don't throw all everything out in one go. The one flaw I found is also the "not-so-exciting" music.

Did I hear Aladdin theme song coming out? And yesh it is! Couple no. 5 even has dressing that of Arabic sense. A veiled lady partner! Cool! One and only one in the competition. I must say it starts very very vvvvvvery slowly, like some lomantika dance! The audience are enticed! Wow, lovely effect, I must say. Its the creativity as well, doing something totally different from everyone. Doing it the INDIAN DANCE style! You know what is missing? The tree in the center, then it will just fit in perfectly. Then maybe at a snap of fingers, suddenly out of nowhere will appear a group of supporting dancers to join them. Ok, im joking but hey, they are doing the most simple dance I have seen so far. But maybe its the entertainment value? Maybe its the ceativity in using non-salsa music but correct beat count? No big moves but it also means less chances of screwing up. The couple is enjoying themselves. You should see all the brilliant smiles on their faces.

Couple no.6 done nothing extraordinary. I can't even recall anything! My god! The only amazing thing I remember from them is the last part, the super-duper "monkey jump up and clung onto the tree" move. I'm flabbergasted! Other than that, nothing out of the ordinary. Moves I seems often and routinely on my saturday nite out at union square.

Finally, the last couple. The one where I thought I saw Jackie Chan "snake fist" movement in one part of their dance! It has a good start, but as the dance progress, i find a little too many repetitive moves. Just nice clean simple moves. I think its on everyone's agenda. Make it small, make it simple, make it clean. But where is the sensual moves? The feeling? The chemistry? The creativity? The bold? And of course the FLAWLESS? I must be getting bored, I definitely am. Causing I'm complaining about her long skirt! WHAHAHAHAH.. I recalled :-)

I think that is all for now. The finals is just 2 days already, and I'm throwing in my votes on who are the top 2 winner, provided they don't make any more mistakes. I believe in them. I trust them. And most important, if the winner is who I blieve is, I'm getting my drinks, FREE drinks. This I will ensure.

Ok now, some other gossips and bitching! WAaahhaha A friend found some fellas blog floating around on the virtual world. Some I know who they are, many I eager to find out. As for why, for me to know, for you to find out. Seems like one of the couple who lost "cannot accept" the fall and "don't understand" why another couple is in instead of a "better" couple. Ok, no naming but I must say, if I am the judge, I will still chooose the other couple else instead of them. Why? Its all written in my blog. Go figure.

This whole competition has sparked off quite a few debates and some unhappiness among the salsaeros and salsaeres. A couple was disqualified for the union square management, and because of that disqualification, they throw in an additional rule to "enforce' their reason for disqualifying the couple. And because of that new rule, they have actually "disqualify" someone else. I have email one of the judges and it seems that the person is been biases or ignoring my email. No response. That person is keeping mum. How nice.

I guess there is just too much "conspiracy" theories for this whole competition. It is a fight for another trophy for the school they are coming from. Did I mention that a lot of emails got banned from been posted on the salasinsingapore forum. A sad issue. I guess they just want to keep their forum "friendly" but its not a good move. So whoever is reading this and knowing what I'm talking about, BITCH YOUR EMAIL TO AN OPEN FORUM THAT ACCEPTS IT. If its any flaming and bombing, dun bother sending into the yahoo forum, it will never get through. NEVER. Unless and of coz if the moderator wanna prove me wrong!

Salsa Competition Semi Final Part 1

Hiyah ppl, its been half a year since I blogged. Basically life aint that wonderful and a lot of thoughts juz slipped out of my mind before I even start ot blog! Anyway, let juz cut it short, ppl who knows me know what im doing wif my life, ppl who dunno me, well... maybe through this blog (that is if i can really blog regularly) starts to know me :-)

ok, let's get on wif the main topic for tonite post. The competition. YESH, i'm going to bitch abt it. Hey, i'm pretty sure ppl who watches Singapore Idol also bitches abt the up and rising "idols" and they wanna be their own judges! Come on, ya kidding who when ya tell me ya aint judging? Anyway, i dun care, i will juz bitch but there's a couple of rules that I set for myself here. No name calling, personal grudges, whether I know the subjected that is been discussed personally or not, I will just bitch abt their performances. I dun care if I "qualify". Who cares? If u are bothered, I suggest u stop reading now and go read something else.

So on roll call, couple no. 1! Wow, I like their music. I'm impressed! My my, they started off very well. but slowly as the music flows, something is amissed. Something is wrong. Observing for a while, I realise what is missing. The smile. The chemistry. The feeling. They are doing big technical moves. Something nice, sweet, easy to follow and digest but maybe becoz with a hundred pairs of eyes looking and scrutinizing them, fears and stress runs through them. Hey, come on, things are different. Doing a dance in front of general public and doing one in front of ppl who knows what you are doing is different. The latter tends to scrutinize coz we knows how to appreciate and want the best. I muz say, the choreo looks pretty good but what is lacking is the male partner who fails to shine his partner, and looking the smile, looking all stress up! Now, that is a minus imfho. of coz the lady partner did her part of pass her attention over to the guy when he is doing his moves. And there is a couple of hiccups. He has forgotten the lead, yesh the very impt lead! He kept missing the leads the girl. It looks like an auto-pilot moves to me. I know, ppl bound to say, this is a choreo, u know at is next but putting in the leads will definitely improve the whole performances.

And of coz the chemistry. As an audience, i would have love the performance more if I can see that they are doing a sensual dance, one that bring to personal together and makes them look like one! hey, im not talking abt sex. Yesh, it can be a sexy dance but nono, no dirty dancing tho I think the audience might juz gone wild wif that thoughts.

I am having high hopes for couple no. 2 because I have personally seen the guy dances on normal days and I must say, i like his style. Probably he's young, agile, light, so u can do all the lightning flash moves which ppl like me wif supermario physique will have to settle for some more "down to earth". But it saddened me when I see their performance. The dance starts off with a very slow and sensual beat. And yesh, they edited their music to suit their choreo. Nice try there but the music just doesnt quite flow well, between the first and second part. I would say, they wanna do it with a piang and yesh, the music does come with a piang.

I guess they are trying too hard, way too hard to shake their bonbon and they missed out the point of natural body movement. It no longer look nartual to me. There is just way too much shake, its like someone has ordered some taiwan paopao tea and the monkey is shaking it up with vigor. Yesh, indeed, true to expectation, they have a lot of technical moves. Way a lot and but the whole thing just dun seems to blend every way. Its like a competition for "more moves the merrier, more technical the better". Nice try. Totally remind me of the prior competition held at suntec where someone did a lot of technical and the general crowds are won over. Too bad for ppl who have dance around for a while and gain even experiences to pass some fair judgement, we know it all that the couple will not win and indeed it is. I see a repeat here again. Hey, I did not say they will not win, I just they are place their emphasis on moves that many other points are skipped. Of coz, those who are sitting in front of me must be getting an eyeful! Man, everything is show in full glory on the multi-quick spins! *bang bang bang* WHY GOT PPL STANDING IN FRONT ME! @#%^&^%$@#%^

Okay, what can i say abt couple no.3? I'm impressed, I'm sweep over! For a moment, I thought I'm like watching a new bollywood movie! The skipping ard, the hip and hop. I would have given both my thumbs for its high entertaining value. Oh yesh, that is just for the first part, a common practice in performance, something of a warm up, doing all the shines and solo dancing. If im the judge, I would say they have done it well, it brings out a little story behind their dance, something that I did not see from the rest. I would have almost full marks, almost, for that part.
Follow by their dance routine, its simple, neat and clean. No big movement, no big techie stunts. Simplicity is the key here. And ho, the chemistry. I thought I saw some small little reaction among the audience. Things are done well, almost no hiccups, i must say. Timing is good. Frankly, if there's fault with them, its must be the lack of big techie moves. But hey, big techie moves can bring in big bonus points but if its done with no chemistry, poor partnership, then I think it has become a letdown and might be cause you some points.

Ok, think I have given too much credit for couple no.3, so let move on to couple no.4. Yesh, another guy which I have high hope in their dance. Oh my, for a moment, I see the big in their style. Instead of a good well-paced song, they actually took up a slower and sensual song. Oh yeah, a different approach. They have touch a lot on the chemistry. It was there, a sense that most dancers in the audience should be able to feel. Hey, if u cant feel, u muz be lacking it. Ok, no cream pie, thank you. I think its wat singaporeans would like to call the "slow and steady" moves. Sensual. Chemistry. Feeling. Style. Oh yeah , they have it, but then, the one point a friend that bring it out is that she is getting bored! Oh, a mystery of the nite, her AGE. Yeah yeah, we all know the secrecy with girl's age but it seems like many of us has doubt over her AGE. Wah lau, it might become the next big joke after william hung. Hey, I say im 21 and u guys dun believe! humpf.

I do not fault them for this. They dun have the big bang moves. The toughest moves I seen and recall is the limbo rock move. I must say that is a good move. Something you do not see often and he does it low. I thought I almost see his body parallel to floor. Come, let call in the matrix movements. Let's have the bullet fly past him. Perfect. Full mark that for that stunt, if Keanu dun claim fame to it.

Ok, couple no.5, the less that most ppl knows about. And in the surprise of the nite, see an ex-classte there and he's to support couple no.5! How great! What I know is he comes from ballroom background. I guess say, they know what they are doing. As ppl will say, that is the ballroom style. They know when to smile, how to smile, how to look and each other. How to seduce the judges. Wow, its great to have some change for another moment.

No big exaggerated moves. Nothing big and fanciful but putting a lot of simple and nice moves together, wif close to perfect timing, clean and neat execution, couple no.5 is the outcome. If we appreciate them well, they come close to a sure-win ticket to the finals. A friend standing behind me say, I dun like the guy. Yeah, neither do I. He NOT handsome at all wah! wah lau eh! The partner not too bad but he! Wah lau! If face got points, he is losing marks! But no lor, we are juz looking at the dance and I must say, its very ballroom style. All moves are chereo to face the judge at the end of each execution. Very good. Bonus points, I must add.

So to sum it up, if u cant tell what I say, then forget it. If not I have already throw in my votes for who is going into the finals. Oh well, I aint no judge, I might be incorrect. What do I know? I'm just a beginner dancing for close to 2 years nia. I not even close to level GOOD. Nevermind, I will work hard, and spin my partner more, throw them more seductive smiles. Stay tune for part 2, that shall be 2 days from now.

Uncle chow page me liao. Gotta go return call..... siang ka pager......
